The Sound of the Desert (Qatar, 2025)
The Sound of the Desert brings together several works from the artistic practice of Guillaume Rousere (G Sound Art), observed and filmed by Masha Segal through a process of close following, listening, and conversation.
The video moves across different installations, field recordings, and moments of making, revealing a shared attention to the desert as a living, resonant environment. Sound here is not treated as background, but as a carrier of the desert's many stories as well as its fragile ecological presence.
The Sound of the Desert is not a documentation of finished works, but a journey through an evolving practice, where wind, vibration, water, and silence become both material and method.

A memory from the desert:
"G and I were field recording in the desert for many hours. We were in a flat, rocky, dry terrain stretching across many kilometers.
At given times of the day and evening, calls for prayer would sound simultaneously from all directions of the desert from the different mosques situated far away.
G made me notice how, several minutes before and after each prayer, the sonic scape of the desert would shift greatly. Some layers of the bird's song would fade, while a layer of insects' song would emerge until we only heard a few birds chirping in the night, accompanied by the soft cricketing of the little wildlife.
It was utterly beautiful to observe how a whole culture was shaped in close attunement to the natural cycles..."
