DEVISING THEATRE WITH THE INDIGENOUS SHUAR COMMUNITY, GUALAQUIZA, ECUADOR
Living and working alongside the Shuar community in an Ecuadorian village, our collaboration was rooted in mutual trust, cultural exchange, and a deep respect for the living heritage of the Shuar people. Together, we created space for storytelling that honored ancestral knowledge, weaving traditional mythology and belief systems into co-devised theatre practices shaped by shared voices and collective vision.

With the guidance of Shuar elders, master artists, and community members, we engaged in workshops, cultural dialogues, and immersive exploration of the Amazonian landscape. These encounters enriched our creative process and strengthened the ties between artistic practice and place-based wisdom. The work was not ours alone; it emerged from a network of relationships, from the river’s edge to the heart of the forest.

Our collaboration culminated in a vibrant, one-day public celebration in downtown Gualaquiza, where locally inspired performances were offered to the broader community. These performances were acts of connection grounded in respect, shaped through collaboration, and shared in celebration.

This experience was not a project or a visit, it was a process of listening, learning, and creating together. At its heart was a commitment to amplifying cultural memory, nurturing community expression, and honoring the power of art as a shared language across worlds.
